Our Story

Hampden Baptist Church was founded in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore, MD, in 1874. Throughout its long history, the church went through multiple seasons of both abundance and hardship, serving as a long-standing center for Christian ministry in Hampden. By the early 21st century, however, church membership had been in a gradual decline. The once-thriving church that once boasted 831 church members could no longer afford the upkeep of the building.

Meanwhile, Pastor Dan Hyun and a team of eleven people were looking for a space to start The Village Church in Hampden. Their goal was to establish a place where anybody and everybody could come and hear the gospel and to experience life transformation. Hampden Baptist graciously allowed The Village to meet in their building, and The Village launched in September 2008. As disciples were being made, The Village began to grow, and in 2015, Hampden Baptist Church decided to bless The Village Church with the ownership of their building in order to continue its legacy of being a gospel presence in the neighborhood.

In hopes of making even more disciples throughout Baltimore, in September 2019, The Village Church will be sending out a team to start a brand new church in the Station North Arts District in Baltimore. We look forward to what God has in store for us.
